43 ~ The Master
the mystery
The place in life only you can occupy.
Not because you have been chosen above another, or because your purpose is greater, but because life is expressing itself through you in a way that cannot be repeated.
The tree does not diminish itself beside the mountain.
The bird does not question its song when it hears the whale.
Each belongs to the whole by being fully what it is.
Maybe this is the deeper meaning of mastery. Not rising above others, but becoming so rooted in your own place that you no longer need to measure yourself against theirs.
You belong to something infinitely greater than yourself.
And you are also one of its expressions.
You do not need to become smaller in order to bow before the Mystery.
Bow deeply.
And stand at your full height.
You are the master.
The human
Staying home in yourself
We leave ourselves more easily than we realise.
Someone seems more certain, more successful, more gifted, more spiritual. Their calling sounds enormous. Their life appears to be opening. And almost imperceptibly, we move.
We make their path evidence about ours. We place them above us and ourselves somewhere below. Or sometimes we travel in the other direction and need to feel more important, more enlightened or more special than someone else.
Both movements take us away from home.
Mastery occupies neither position.
I am not greater than you.
I am not less than you.
I am here.
Your task is not to never wobble. You will leave yourself sometimes. Mastery is noticing when you have gone – and becoming very good at returning.
Again and again, you come back to your own life, your own relationship with the Mystery, your own work, your own next step.
Mastery is the art of staying home in yourself.
The pause
Take your place
Feel your feet on the ground.
Let your attention come back from everyone you have been watching, measuring yourself against, trying to impress, please, follow or understand.
Bring it home. Feel the weight of your body. The place you are actually standing.
You don’t need anyone else’s certainty.
You don’t need their path.
You don’t need to prove that yours is greater.
There is something entrusted to your hands.
Take it seriously. Not because you are special.
Because it is yours to tend.
Say quietly:
I am here.
This is my place.
This is my life to live.
the living question
No longer making yourself small
Mastery does not ask you to become more important than anyone else.
It asks you to stop disappearing from your own life.
It asks you to notice where you still leave yourself, hand away your authority or wait for permission to become fully present.
Where do I still leave myself - and what would I do differently today if I did not need to be special, but no longer allowed myself to be small?

For the teachers whose presence asks us not to hide.
We can only meet them by coming as ourselves.
They do not ask us to follow in their footsteps.
They ask us to stand in our own place and bring what is ours to bring.
And for the moment we understand that mastery is not about
standing above or beneath anyone else.
It is about being fully who we are.
And taking our place.
