32 ~ The Old Tree
the mystery
Complete within herself
Some presences do not need to speak. We come near them and remember that we are not alone.
The Old Tree may appear as an ancient oak, a towering sequoia, a great kauri or a beautifully flowering pōhutukawa. Wherever she grows, she carries the same quiet presence – her roots deep in the earth, her branches reaching into the sky and complete within herself.
We come near the Old Tree and recognise an elder presence – something that has stood within life much longer than we have. In her presence, our own lives become part of a much greater passage of time.
She has stood through seasons of flowering and falling, abundance and emptiness, arrival and return. She does not hold on to what must leave or reach for what has not yet come. She remains within the great rhythm of life.
A young tree may grow beneath her branches, finding its own way towards earth and light. The Old Tree does not teach it how to grow. Her presence simply reveals that growth has its own wisdom and that life knows how to continue.
The Old Tree is the place where earth, sky and time meet. She reminds us that beneath everything changing, there is a deeper presence that remains.
The human
Coming near
When The Old Tree appears, you may be tired from trying to understand, organise or hold together too much. Your thoughts may have travelled far ahead of you, searching for answers or trying to secure an outcome that has not yet taken form.
This card does not ask you to do more. It invites you to come closer.
There are moments when what we need is not another answer, but contact with something that stands whole and undisturbed. A tree, a place, an ancestral presence or the quiet sacredness within life may return us to ourselves without offering any explanation.
You do not have to make the stillness useful. You do not have to ask it to solve what concerns you. Simply remain near it for a while. Let its presence meet yours.
The Old Tree does not take away the unknown. She reminds you that you can rest beside it.
The pause
Beneath her branches
Sit beneath a tree, lean gently against its trunk or imagine yourself entering the quiet space beneath its branches.
Feel the earth supporting your body and the tree standing beside you. Nothing needs to pass between you. Nothing needs to be explained.
If you are carrying worry or heavy energy, allow it to rise with your breath through the open branches towards the sun, where it may dissipate and be transformed.
Then become still again.
For a few moments, let the Old Tree be exactly what she is – and let yourself be exactly where you are.
the living question
What the stillness reveals
Some questions are not asking for an immediate answer. They invite us to become still enough to notice what changes in their presence.
Carry this question gently. Let it accompany you without trying to resolve it. Notice what begins to soften when you stop searching for direction and come near something steady, whole and undisturbed.
What becomes quiet within me when I come near a presence that asks nothing of me?

For the old pōhutukawa who welcomed my young family when we arrived in a new land –
my little son climbing through her branches and my baby daughter resting with me among her great roots.
When everything around us was unfamiliar, she received us as though she had always known us.
She asked nothing, explained nothing and yet, in her presence, we belonged.
